Template overrides vs. presets?

    • How does duplicating a template, saving a copy in the list with a different name, referred to as an "Override", differ from saving a “Preset”?

    • Hi, presets load your saved changes, or default presets, into the template settings, which can be layouts, style sheets, other settings ECT. An override is generally used to make changes to a specific page or sets of pages on your site, as the main difference in an override is the Assignments tab, allowing you to apply the changes to specific pages. Inside the override, you could choose another preset to use, then that change would be applied to the pages you assign in the assignment tabs. Hope that makes sense.

    • BRILLIANT! Expertly explained.
I have several sections on my site that have to look slightly different.
"Save A Copy", make my changes, apply to desired pages.
      Awesome!
      Thanks again.

    • So there is no direct option to actually copy an existent override when adding a new one within the same template preset?
I mean, what if I am going from scratch and created the override for a given page. I now want to assign this same override that I just created to another (second) page and make slight adjustments and eventually give it a new name. Can I do that somehow ( I mean copying all settings and assignments), or do I have to start all over for the secondly added override?

    • I'm discovering that an "override" is just a clone of the master template, in which you make changes.
If you create a new override by doing a "Save as copy", and then make changes to that down the road. You can then do a "Save as copy" again, with a new name and have a new override.
They don't cascade off of each other; only the master template. So you can have dozens of "sub-templates" (Overrides) which will not rely on or effect each other.

I'm hoping a moderator chimes in to confirm my comment. It's tough being a newbie. :-)

    • Hi Scot, you're right, they use the master template as a base. Whatever is set in the master is considered the default settings. That's why it's a good idea to get your master template set first, which ever pages use that layout the most should be the default, then you only have to create overrides for the pages that are different. Any settings you do not override are still controlled by the master, so changing the master will also change the other pages unless that particular setting has been overriden in your copy. Hope that helps.

    • Dear friends, if I understand right my case will be like this:
I have some item menu (3)
I want the first one have blue menus and colors(preset blue)
The second one have green menus and colors(preset green)
The third one have purple menus and colors(preset purple)
So if I want to do that I must duplicate rt_momentum - Default -master and have 3 templates momentum everyone with different preset and assign each one to the relative menu. Is that right?
PD: I have the "preset save" issue....is very annoying

    • Hi, that's right, 3 copies, set each copy how you want and make the menu assignments in the assignments tab.
