Hi, there isn't a lot to it. You turn it on, then the positions alias' section maps which modules you wish to show on the mobile site - much like the module positions in the regular template. You can select modules you are already using on your regular site, just choose the position you wish to use from the drop down (showcase - for example). Or you can create new modules in the module manager assigned to the mobile positions "mobile-top" for example, and use those positions to create a completely different site for mobile - or you can use a combination of both.
This page from our most recent template has a module map for mobile as an example. Really, that is the extent what you can do with it. How you want to set it up is completely up to you. You'll most likely have to experiment to get what you want.
Why is it that I cannot include more than one module in a mobile position? For instance, across the footer of a site I am doing, I have 4 menus occupying footer a-d, but the mobile only shows A. No worries I thought, I will simply copy the module in the regular template position Footer-B, rename it, and set it's position to Mobile footer, thinking it would fall below the menu module already there. But it does not show.
Are there limitations? I don't see how I can include side bar items or additional footer modules this way, as well as others.
Hi, I'm not having that issue. I have two modules in the mobile footer position, they both show one on top of the other. You might want to check to be sure that the modules are published and assigned to the pages you want to see them on - that got me when I was testing this. Let me know if that's not it.
As far as limitations, yes there are some by default. The whole point of a mobile theme is that it's able to be seen easily on a small mobile device, therefore it's designed to be simple. Having multiple module positions, sidebars, columns, ECT kind of defeats the purpose of what it's supposed to do. Seems like the content wouldn't be much easier to get to than it would on a regular website. Keep in mind that your target audience has a two inch wide screen in most cases.
You could definitely modify the theme to add as much as you want, add module positions into templateDetails.xml, template-options.xml and modify the iphone and android index.php files to include what ever you like. Gantry is flexible like that, but you'll have to do some custom work to make it happen. It's the same in all Gantry themes, some docs on how to do this are here, they are for regular positions, but the same applies to mobile I would imagine.
I have placed 2 modules in the mobile footer - and they are published and set to show on All pages in the menu assignment. Yet they still do not show on my iPhone.
I would agree in keeping the mobile version a bit more slimmed down. And I do not want to go in and modify any core files, I just want to experiment with what's available to me out of the box, and I am not seeing anything I am trying yet.
Okay, thanks for checking. If you want to PM me your login I can have a look and see if I can figure out what's happening there with the footer.
Honestly, the mobile theme is extremely simple, there aren't a lot of options out of the box. You can choose what modules show on it, and that's about it. The upcoming version of Gantry will offer some responsive features that may eliminate the need for separate browser themes and this system. We'll just have to wait and see what that means exactly, but all mobile stuff is going in that direction.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.
I am really looking forward to see what RT comes up with in terms of responsive themes. That is indeed a direction everyone , including competitors like YooTheme are doing.
I appreciate ur help and will have ro PM log in info when I am in front of my computer.
Hey man, I took a look. In your module manager, I only see one module assigned to footer-a - which is what your mobile footer is set to. If you want them to stack, they have to all be in the footer-a position - the mobile layout sections can only display one module position.
I would recommend copying the modules you want to stack to the mobile positions, mobile-footer, then it will do what you want without messing up your regular site.

If you have 2 mobile-footer position published then you're good - I didn't look at that because in your template settings, you have the mobile-footer alias pointing to footer-a - therefore it shows the footer-a position, not the mobile-footer position. Change the mobile alias position drop down to mobile-footer and it should work.
