Gantry and Joomla Module Count

Sorry if this question sounds silly but i couldn't find a direct answer in any of the RT or Gantry forums.
I was wondering that if i have a fresh installation of Joomla with its regular 24 or so positions, and then install gantry, will my module positions automatically increase to 65? Meaning will the 65 positions be readily available to use?
Is this something that happens automatically or would i have to manually create the available module positions in my joomla template to match what Gantry has available?

I thought Gantry was just a "platform" and that i could put any joomla installation or template on top off it and just add whatever code i needed to make them work together.
I didnt know that you have to start off with the gantry template in order to make Gantry work.
