Gantry 3.x Default Template: Future Complications?

We've been developing some websites using the default Gantry 3.x template over the last year and, after spinning up the new 4.x template for the first time last week I can see significant changes in the structure -- as well as inclusion of the usual swathe of new features.
After seeing the differences, my major question is: Are there any issues in using the older 3.x default template?
Specifically:
1) When version 5, 6, etc come along for the Gantry Framework will templates built upon the 3.x default template still work?
2) If yes, awesome. If no, what's the recommended path for changing over without a complete re-build of the CSS into the new 4.x format?
3) Are there any other possible complications?
