sidebar-a strech up to top of maintop

Hi!
A have been trying to achieve for a long time to have sidebar-a position start from the top of maintop .
In other words I want a left sidebar, sliders and banners next to it, and the mainbody and sidebar right beneath the slider&banner area.
Do you have any idea how to figure it out?
