Custom Article parameters

Hi,
In a current Joomla 2.5 site I am using this custom css to control my article bg:
.component-content .rt-article {margin-right: -12px; background: #fff; border: 1px solid #F3F3F3; box-shadow: 0 1px 3px rgba(202, 202, 202, 0.9); padding: 10px; margin-left: -12px;}
At the moment I have it saved in libraries/gantry/css/joomla.css which I know is bad practice as when I update gantry it will overwrite my custom file. I would like to put it into my custom.css file but when I do it does not overwrite the joomla.css. Is there any more specificity I need to make it work?
