Updating Gantry temporarily breaks site

I am having an ongoing issue with a site that uses the Ionosphere template and Gantry.
Anytime I update Gantry, the template completely fails for about 15 minutes, but then resolves and displays normally. During this time, the template manager also loses all formatting and locks up.
When I run the update I turn off Gantry cache in the template manager as well as Gantry Gzipper.
I turn off cache in the System settings and Gzip compression in the server settings. I also clear and purge cache. No matter what I do, the site falls apart and I just have to wait for it to recover.
It's very nerve wracking because I am never sure if the site will come back.

CentOS release 6.2 (Final) x86_64
Apache 2.2.15
PHP 5.3.3
MySQL 5.1.61 (utf8_general_ci collation)
Joomla! 2.5.14 Stable

Well your site seems to be ok now. Whenever you update Gantry you should be clearing server cache - site > maintenance > clear cache. My other question to you would be - are you using a CDN? - if so you would also need to clear cache on the CDN too. Finally, do you have any other form of caching active on the server itself (again you would need to clear this too).
