How to update Gantry plug-in and Default Theme

Hello,
I'm trying to apply the 1.1.15 update to my existing 1.1.12 plugin. I tried simply installing over the existing one but it fails reporting that the directory "public_html/wp-content/plugins/gantry/" already exists. So I expanded the .zip locally and used ftp to drag the contents into the corresponding directory on the server. That seemed to work fine and it reports that it is up to date.
Next I simply added the new 1.1.15 as I would any theme and activated it. That made the 1.1.12 inactive. The overrides I setup seem to still be active.
Is this a good way to do this? Is there a better way?

Hi, you should be fine. Another way to do it is to look at the changelog and find which files have been changed and just upload those into your existing framework and theme.
Just as long as it's still working it's all good. - The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.
