SOLVED Page heirarchy and override assignments issue in WP

    • I know there is already a post on this but it was never solved for the initial issue. My page heirarchy looks like this:

      parent
      child
      child

The parent and both children have the same override assigned to them by category. I would like to keep that override, but I would also like just the parent to have another override to display a slideshow widget. I created this theme override, assigned it to the parent page and now the slideshow shows up on the parent AND all the children. I assigned the override to the parent page AND the parent menu item and the slideshow is still on all the children also. Is there a way I can NOT have the children included in this override? Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks!

      WP: 3.9.2
      Gantry:4.1.2
      Theme: Graffito

    • Because of the way WP works Child pages will naturally inherit Overrides from their Parent pages... so, you can create specific overrides for the Child pages that remove or change those options you don't want, or want different, from the Parent Page...

So say the Slideshow widget is configured in the Showcase position of the Parent Page...

Create a new override for the Child Pages and select the Showcase Position (tick the box on the Position) and ensure that there are no widgets placed in the position.

    • Thank you for your response, I was aware that was an option, I was just trying to keep things dynamic. We will be adding children pages randomly and if we happen to forget to add that page to the new override then it will display with the slideshow. I was hoping there would be a better way so if we decide to add a child page 6 months down the road we won't have to remember this work around. Is there any function I could add to the template that you know of for this situation? Or a more dynamic work around?

    • If the parent pages and child pages were in seperate categories you could just create a single 'child override' by category... is there a new/unique category... or tag for that matter... that you can add to the child pages?

    • Perfect! I ended up assigning the parent page to a specific category, along with the category that assigns the template, then assigning the override with the slideshow to just that category. Thank you!
