Error: Could not extract file from archive. g5_helium

  • Error: Could not extract file from archive. g5_helium

    • I just experienced the same issue as the user reported in this thread .

      Using VirtualMin/Webmin system setup.

I tried both Helium wordpress-tpl_g5_helium_v5.4.18.zip and Hydrogen theme wordpress-tpl_g5_hydrogen_v5.4.18.zip and received the same error.

Installing Theme from uploaded file: wordpress-tpl_g5_helium_v5.4.18.zip
      Unpacking the packageā€¦

Could not extract file from archive. g5_helium/./

I'm taking the time to report this issue because how strange is it that two users with different system setups are given the same error.

Perhaps there's something hidden deeper that needs investigating.

Also, no errors in Apache log to indicate anything else might be causing this.

Extracting the .zip file and compressing the file again resolves this issue.

After comparing the zip files with zipdetails there is a clear difference between the MS-DOS .zip compression and Unix compression.

This is MS-DOS version which is downloaded from gantry.org. Notice the filename 'g5_helium/./'

      000000 LOCAL HEADER #1 04034B50
      000004 Extract Zip Spec 14 '2.0'
      000005 Extract OS 00 'MS-DOS'
      000006 General Purpose Flag 0000
      000008 Compression Method 0000 'Stored'
      00000A Last Mod Time 4B3595F3 'Thu Sep 21 18:47:38 2017'
      00000E CRC 00000000
      000012 Compressed Length 00000000
      000016 Uncompressed Length 00000000
      00001A Filename Length 000C
      00001C Extra Length 0000
      00001E Filename 'g5_helium/./'

The version that is compression on a Unix/Linux system has the following header. Notice the filename 'g5_helium/'

      000000 LOCAL HEADER #1 04034B50
      000004 Extract Zip Spec 14 '2.0'
      000005 Extract OS 03 'Unix'
      000006 General Purpose Flag 0000
      000008 Compression Method 0000 'Stored'
      00000A Last Mod Time 4B4EBD16 'Sat Oct 14 23:40:44 2017'
      00000E CRC 00000000
      000012 Compressed Length 00000000
      000016 Uncompressed Length 00000000
      00001A Filename Length 000A
      00001C Extra Length 0000
      00001E Filename 'g5_helium/'

It appears the remaining files that are compressed are done in idential fashion. So this extraction issue appears to be caused by the MS-DOS based compression method utilized.

For convenience please find gantry5 hydrogen template attached zipped on a Linux machine for your diagnosis. Please see if you have any difficulty extracting on a Windows machine or on your Wordpress dev instances.

    • Also just experienced the same issue on a brand new WP install, neither theme (Hydrogen nor Helium) would install with the same error message. The site is hosted by Siteground. I'll unzip & re-zip and try again or just upload via FTP, but it seems like it may be a persistent issue.

    • @Damir , Thanks for testing with Windows.

As I explained this issue is with Linux based servers.

If you look at the zip headers it is encoded via a MS-DOS format.

Windows machines do not appear to be affected.

    • @Liser Keyser, yes same thing on my machines.

There is a reproducible issue with the .zip file format.

    • As a follow-up, unzipping & re-zipping (on Windows) resulted in the "missing style.css" error message, which I see others have experienced as well. I just ended up using FTP to install the themes, which worked fine, but may not be an option for less advanced users.
