Gantry does not update my changes.

Let me start by saying that I am NEW to this entirely. I have some old experience building some basic sites using html and then frontpage (yes, it's been that long).
I have Joomla 1.7 with the Pancea theme. Gantry is version 3.2.8. When I am attempting to update the gantry fields, they are dimmed. I click a box to the outside of the field and it highlights and allows me to make changes. A blue circle appears at the top of the category with a number that seems to represent the number of items I changed. I then click save at the top and get a message that the changes were successful. However, when I view the frontend, hit refresh, the changes do not appear. When I get back into the themes manager and look at my theme, the blue circles with the numbers are still there.
I have found some older posts where people described a similar problem, but their problems seem to be that when they try to save a gantry change, it doesn't seem to save. This problem seems different.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Ok, I have new information on this topic. I was using a duplicate to my pancea theme. When I change the default template to the "master" all options in gantry are available again and are not dimmed. When I click save, the changes do appear on frontend. I need to be able to use as a duplicate as I want to have the "master" as a back up in case I make a serious error. Any thoughts on why this is happening and how I can correct it?

hi there,
you can have the master and set it as default. then you can have as many duplicates as you like, configure them to your needs and assign them to the desired menu items. you can have duplicates assigned to all pages, so the master would not show anywhere.

- I'm not sure I fully understand. I am wanting to save the master as-is when I download it and use a duplicate to update and be the default. But it appears I cannot save any changes to the gantry section of the duplicate, is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

yes, you can apply changes to the duplicate, but they will only show on those pages where you have assigned that duplicate to.
certain settings, such as the 'menu-less pages' for example can only be configured in the master itself as they can only apply to all pages and not to some pages only.
