I am probably just going crazy. I could have swore that when I first installed Gantry 5 (just last week!) the default template had the showcase section and subfeature? section on the layout page. I proceeded to create a duplicate outline to work from, so I didn't mess up the base outline (which was likely to happen!) Anyway, on my new home outline I removed the showcase section from the home page, as I didn't have anything to put there. When I went to create a different layout for another page, the showcase section was no longer available. I could only add new particles and rows to the remaining sections.
So my question (as I previously put this in another forum incorrectly-MrT) is how do I add these sections back into the layout for future pages? Do I need to create another preset layout using the advanced documentation provided? Did I totally mess up the default themes somehow or am I just imagining that they were available to begin with?
The Hydrogen template "default" outline does not have a "showcase" section. I don't know what you mean by "subfeature" either? (perhaps you mean the "feature" section? this again is not present in the default outline).
Please see screenshot of my own Hydrogen install.
The "showcase" and "feature" sections are present in the Hydrogen "home" outline. If you really want those sections to be in the "default" outline too then you can press the "load" button on the layout and choose the "home" preset (make sure you take notice of any warnings and that you have the "keep particles" box checked.
