Gantry - Poor PageSpeed Insights

I've noticed that my wordpress sites that use gantry are getting lower scores on Google PageSpeed Insights than when I load a standard template/wordpress theme without Gantry.
Can you confirm that Gantry slows down the test results and if so do you have suggestions to help. I have a client that is ready to dump gantry becuase they feel it slows down their site.
We are in production mode btw.
