Popup login not working

I've tried to carefully follow all instructions here

to setup my login as a popup. However, it's not working.
Some things to note :
1. nearly all the directions were not needed as my template (Crystalline) already seemed to be set up for this functionality
2. however, in one step, the template was not ready - the templates.xml section and the code had to be added
The mod_login module is enabled and set to popup. The Gantry feature for the login module is now at the top of the list but I can't seem to set it ON. It looks like it's ON but after a save it's OFF.
Any advice ?

hi there,
you do not need to follow that tutorial there at all, crystalline fully supports the member login popup by default as can be seen in the demo.
please undo all the changes you have applied and then make sure that you configure the already existing feature correctly as described here:
