Hi,
The latest Gantry filename seems to suggest it is intended for Joomla 1.6:
rt_gantry_j16-3.2.0-bundle.zip
But can this version also be installed on Joomla 1.5?

no the latest version for Joomla 1.5 is 3.1.9
see here: code.google.com/p/gantry-framework/downloads/list
the Joomla 1.5 will remain in the 3.1.x nomenclature for now.
The Joomla 1.6 has started of the 3.2.x version series.
