    SOLVED General Gantry questions

Posted 14 years 1 month ago
    • Hello Everyone,

      What this post covers:
      1. Intro: Background Information
      2. Joomla Version and Technical Experience
      3. Gantry Templating?
      4. RokEcwid component?
      5. K2 Integration?
      6. What I can contribute, beside cold hard cash
      Intro: Background Information
Hello everyone. Brand new to RocketTheme and Gantry. Very exciting stuff from what I can see. Been researching and lurking through both the Gantry site and RT's main site sifting through all the user forums, documentation and videos. Top Notch stuff. Thanks for all the hard-work. From everything I've gathered about RT so far, I believe it has everything I need to make it my Joomla home. 8) Great support from the looks of the responses I see, knowledgeable staff and user community, tons of tutorials/documentation, and most if not all, I would have all extensions I would need with one company/community. This really excites me. For me, I should be able to use one company's extensions, one framework (Gantry) for all sites that I build. I decided yesterday to give it a try. A person can't go wrong spending $50 for a 60day membership as a test run. :D

      Joomla Version and Technical Experience
Sticking to Joomla 1.5.22 for now until 1.6 matures into whatever it was meant to mature into. Reminds me of how Vista was basically a big beta test for Win7. Interesting to see how long Joomla 1.6 will be around before we see a 1.7 or 2.x.
I've been messing around with Joomla on and off for almost 2yrs. Very comfortable with Xhtml and css and the Joomla Backend. Never used or purchased templates. Bought a book and learned how to create my own templates. (I've learned a lot, but everyone of my customers wants something different. Which makes sense but it's starting to really takes it's toll on me.
So I think I've gotten to the point now, where I understand why a framework like Gantry is my next step. It appears to have the features I need to effectively take a customers requirements and have a working prototype up and running in less than half the time I'm used to spending. (Still to be seen). I use Rochen for all my site hosting.

      Gantry Templating?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. One doesn't purchase RT templates and install ontop of Gantry correct? Or do I use Entitlement Templates and enable them after installing the latest Gantry Framework Bundle?
Gantry has a core template that one customizes and builds to his/her desires?

I read the Gantry Joomla install documentation, but when I clicked on the Download link, the packages listed had me a bit confused until I downloaded them and looked inside. Not trying to knock anyone's work, but it would be nice if this part of the experience wasn't so unclear and confusing. Kinda takes the wind out of your sails for a bit.

Something like: "Here's a list of packages and what they contain".
      Andy Miller said:
gantry bundle - template + framework + plugin
gantry rocketlauncher - joomla + template + framework + plugin + sample data (ready to roll site)
gantry sources - fireworks source files for gantry default template
gantry template - just the sample template
gantry system plugin - plugin to help with caching of gantry framework
gantry bootstrap - bootstrap file, generally never needed
gantry framework - just the framework

After downloading all the Gantry packages for Joomla 1.5, applying a little common sense to pkg sizes, opening them up and then reading a posting reply from Andy, helped make everything clear.

      RokEcwid component?
I'm trying to find out info how this integrates with Gantry but I don't see RokEcwid listed? I see it being used in the Mercado Template. That has me very confused. I don't see a specific forum for RokEcwid. Maybe I'm confused about Gantry all together. Why is RokEcwid, a component, tied to a specific template(Mercado)? That has me concerned. I thought I could use any RocketTheme component with Gantry?

      K2 Integration?
How well does K2 play with Gantry or vicea/versa? I'm not seeing much on this. Are their any good K2/Gantry tutorials?

      What I can contribute
I live in a big retirement town. I routinely make desktop videos with Camtasia Studio for the people learning how to use computers for the first time. If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video must be worth a million. If I can get extra time to make and edit some videos about Gantry as I'm learning, then I will surely share those with the community.

      Thanks for your time,
      Joshua

    • Woopsee. Is there anyway I can get this moved to the correct Gantry forum? Accidentally posted in the wrong area.

      Sorry about that.

    • Moved...

      Just some quick info:

      1. Intro: Background Information

      Welcome to RT.

      2. Joomla Version and Technical Experience

Wise to wait for the move to J1.6.
      www.rockettheme.com/blog/joomla/988-shou...upgrade-to-joomla-16

      3. Gantry Templating?

      Correct..
The first Gantry template debuted in 12/09, since then all of RT templates have been Gantry based. Gantry will not work with pre-Gantry templates. However you can build your own templates with the basic Gantry core template available here:
      www.gantry-framework.org/

      4. K2 Integration?

Not all templates have K2 support, RT cycles through various 3rd party extensions and offers support for some of them in each template but not all of them.
Along with that, consider Joomla work has not yet decided to have K2 in version J1.6, or wait until J1,7, 1.8.

      5. What I can contribute, beside cold hard cash

For starters, if you do have time and want to make contributions, you can post what you have here.

Ahhhhhh... I think I see the light now. I was under the assumption Gantry was some type of spin off that RT created that was an independent framework of RT Templates.

So now I hear you saying that Gantry is the core framework that all RT templates ride on.

So If I'm running a plain vanilla install of Joomla and want to use a RT template I have to install Gantry? (Given it's a template created after 12/09)

Once I actually get a better understanding of how RT works and start working with it, then yes, for sure I will share. Right now, I'm missing some RT basics. Won't take long to get upto speed.

      Thanks JEM,

    • Forgot to add this part as it's important for my customer.

      RokEcwid component?
I'm trying to find out info how this integrates with Gantry but I don't see RokEcwid listed? I see it being used in the Mercado Template. That has me very confused. I thought I could use any RocketTheme component with Gantry Framework?

I hope someone can help make this more clear for me.

If want to use RokEcwid do I have to use the Mecrado Template or can I simply install the Gantry Framework, plugin and core template and then use the RokEcwid component?

    • RokEcwid is a bridge to ecwid and can probably be used on any template that you install ecwid on.

It was just introduced to RT with specific styling for the Mercado template. Just as some templates come with JomSocial or K2 specific styling. So while you can use it in any template, there will be no specific styling for it other than in the Mercado template currently.

Bridge? As in I don't have to manage my store via logging into my account on the Ecwid site? Everything that I would normally do on the Ecwid site to manage my store can be accomplished through the Joomla Backend?

      Thanks for the useful info.
