500 error upgrading or reinstalling gantry, joomla 2.5

Hi, I was having problems with roktabs and roknewspager, and in response to a post in that forum it was suggested that I update my gantry. (See post:

However, I had problems upgrading gantry. I have joomla 2.5.3 and am using the Modulus Template, installed with Gantry bundled. Gantry version was 3.2.16 and I tried to update to 3.2.17. However, I got a 500 server error and the installed seemed to be incomplete (read buggy)
I read through Kat's troubleshooting tips and decided to try to go back to 3.2.16 (all other settings correct). On uninstall of 3.2.17, I got a couple of errors (sorry, did not keep track of them, one was about deleting language file and other about non existent xml file in admin/component/com_gantry). When I tried to reinstall 3.2.16 I got this error:
500 - An error has occurred.

Before I could see the gantry components, even though the version (after failed update) was undefined when I went into template edit. However, now no Gantry components are visible.
I tried turning off ftp layer and installing, but get a similar message:
