    SOLVED Gantry 4 & 5

Posted 9 years 4 months ago
    • Hello

Is it posible and stable to use a Gantry 4 template on some of my joomla pages and use a Gantry 5 template on others (at the same time)??

      Cheers. - Dave.

    • If you really want to yes. The two frameworks can co-exist - but personally I wouldn't do it - it will get awfully confusing.

    • I renew this question a year away. I'm evaluating this step for a customer who wants a new template with gantry 5; probably Citadel with video particles. During the development, the two frameworks should coexist, then I will uninstall the gantry 4 as soon as the client has confirmed the new layout.

The portal is very developed and contains many contents. Therefore, I thought I'd start with the current site and then install the new template.

      Is it still possible today?

    • Yes, it's possible but you may have to create demo (equivalent) content yourself for certain pages and it will still get confusing having both frameworks installed at the same time. Also there are limitations two because many things operate off the "default" template (yellow star in template manger) such as default particles or roksprocket layouts etc etc.

But it is possible, sure, as long as you are aware of the limitations and conplications and are prepared to work around them.

    • I've imaginary such limitations, but I do not see a better and faster way to migrate to the new portal without re-charging the content.

I thought I'd load at first the new template Citadel, then assign all pages to this new template, and shortly after uninstall the old template Osmosis.

But I have a doubt: will it be possible at the end of this work to uninstall the old Gantry4 framework? It seems to me that gantry4 is part of the CMS system and can't be uninstalled.

    • 1. you could clone your site to a test area and then do all your changes in the test area (no good if you site data in production continues to be updated though) using Akeeba backup and Akeeba Kickstart.
      2. You could extract your articles/categories/menus using something like J2XML from production and then import them into your test site based on a rocketlauncher.
      3. You can do as your described but be aware... the outlines of Citadel will probably not have all the module positions that you have used in Osmosis on their layouts - so you will have to add them or nothing will show. Also, any custom CSS that you have written for Osmosis will not work in Citadel.
      4. Yes you can uninstall Osmosis and Gantry 4 after doing as your described it easily possible. Citadel does not use Gantry 4 at all.

    • Thanks and I'll see if it works. For the cloning I have already done everything about my server user interface PLESK. The website (old osmosis) is already fully upgraded in a developing area.

Thanks for the work around indications!

    • This template upgrade procedure seems to work. At this time I'm working on the graphic adaptation of the new citadel template. All contents and modules have been retrieved and partially maintained without too much variations.

I briefly summarize here my experience:

      1. I cloned the old website with gantry 4 osmosis template in a development area and updated it to the latest updates (joomla/gantry 4/template osmosis/modules/plugins/etc.)

      2. I installed the latest version of gantry 5

      3. I installed the latest version of the citadel template

      4. I analyzed the module positions I used in the old Gantry 4, and entered them in the new Gantry 5 by renaming the already existing one.

      5. In the template styles settings, I flagged the new Citadel template as the default

At this time I'm customizing the styles and adapting the graphics to the customer requests. The next step will be to uninstall the old osmosis template including the old gantry 4 framework.
