Assigning particles to menu items.

Particles are put on a layout in an outline - it is the outline that is assigned to a menu item.
OR
You can create a Gantry 5 module particle (basically a module wrapper around a particle) that means your can then assign a gantry 5 module particle to a position and also assign the menu item in module manager as you would for any other module.

Thanks Mark - got it.
So, in theory if you wanted modules to only appear once, you could assign them to menu items using outlines/layouts, but if you want them to appear on multiple pages you would use the more traditional assignment option in the module?
Loving the new Gantry 5 so far.

You want to keep the number of outlines to a minimum. Let me explain the two extremes... first you could have a single outline with nothing but "module position" particles on the layout - this would mean that all content could be assigned through module manager. Conversely you could have an outline for every single page (menu item) of your site with all the content being added directly on the layout with particles (so you wouldn't need to do anything in module manager). The reality is somewhere between the two extremes, but in general you should keep the number of outlines to a minimum. Why? because if you go the latter route things that are common between pages (e.g. a logo) would have to be repeated in every outline layout and things soon get unmanageable.
The Gantry 5 module particle allows you to use one module across multiple layouts and to use the same "module position" for different content on different pages (menu items).
