Responsive Columns - Old Style in Gantry 5

I have a question regarding the instructions found on this thread.

I'm in a similar situation and have followed the instructions but have a problem. The columns don't break down to single column on mobile sized device.
1) In the above thread the MOD suggests grabbing CSS and example from here:

This is the layout on my page

Secure tab has the link. Try collapsing down to mobile, stays at 2 columns.

Can you please advise and tell what the approach is here?
I simply want to create responsive columns in a custom html module.
I've tried to use particles but for a variety of reasons they are incompatible with what I'm trying to accomplish.
Are you saying there is no way to create responsive columns in Gantry 5?

No...it CAN BE DONE with some loving HTML. Give me a day or two as I'm actually working on something like this
