    Particle vs Extension Concerns

Posted 8 years 5 months ago
    • We like Gantry 5 very much, but have some concerns with the shift of RocketTheme from extensions to particles. Here are some of our concerns:
      • We use watchful.li to keep the extensions of many sites up-to-date. The only way to keep particles up-to-date is update templates, which currently don't use the Joomla auto updater.
      • It is very difficult to hunt down particles in other templates that would be useful in the current template. There is no repository to search.
      • When we do use a particle from another template in a site, to keep it updated is even more problematic. You have to keep track of the template from which it came and then upload the updates to the particle you are using to the current template.
      • Rather than one extension like RokSprocket, we now have to keep track of an endless variation of Owl Carousel, for example, none of which have the ability for a client to crop or resize images.
      • This makes it very difficult for agencies who have multiple clients on retainer to keep G5 sites updated.
      • The particles that take custom html do not have WYSIWYG editors, not client friendly.

We believe that particles should be developed independent of templates (except for template-specfic CSS). They should be able to be used in any other template. Particles should be able to be installed and updated with the Joomla updater and watchful. A repository of some type should be established for searching for particles. Template particles would be made available only to paying customers.

Are there any plans to address any of these concerns?

    • Thanks. MrT's concerns are almost identical to mine. Hope updatable particles are available in the near future.
