    • When will Rocketthemes be avaialbe for the Joomla 1.6. I know it is only in the second version of beta, but looks like it will be available before long. Will the currnet 1.5 templates (newest ones) work with 1.6? If not, how long before Rockettheme will have 1.6 versions of the newest templates?

    • Plenty of topic on this already.

Google 'upgrading from Joomla 1.5 to joomla 1.6'

You'll see that many of the topics are at a dead end as it's not been determined if it will be an update or a migration as the case was for J1.0 to J1.5.

Old articles, but really good points to consider.

Even if you could update or migrate from J1.5 to 1.6 you need to be sure that all your 3rd party components were compatible with the new version.

If you can update a current install, fairly soon after the first stable release, you should be able update your templates.

If it turns out to be more involved than an update and requires migration because core features are incompatible (coded differently) it may be a month or so after the first stable release before you see J1.5 & J1.6 versions of the latest templates as the team goes through the process of changing the templates over and having two versions as they did for the J1.0 to J1.5 templates.

In any case, two points to consider, if you have a lot of 3rd party components and they are not ready for 1.6, you'll be sitting on your hands waiting for the developers to catch up. and even when the first stable release is made, it's probably best to let the dust settle a bit.

After the stable release of J1.5, updates 1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.5.3, 1.5.4 came out within weeks.

I don't know how many sites you manage, but updating half a dozen or so on a weekly basis while the bugs are getting worked out is no joy.

And it wasn't until after the release of 1.5.6 that a huge security flaw which was causing tons of sites to get hacked was fixed.

Of course we are all dying to get our hands on the latest version and update / migrate our sites, too but sometimes it's best to wait a bit.

On a side note, I'm on a mailing list for Joomla updates so each time a new version is released I'm notified. A few weeks ago, 1.5.16 came out, it had a bug which caused many users problems with their sites, not just RT members but users in general. It was fixed a few days later in 1.5.17, and now we are already on 1.5.18. Of course, it's best to upgrade ASAP, especially when there a security flaw, but I usually wait a day or two before doing so to see if there are any problems.
