    File hosting question????

Posted 18 years 1 month ago
    • Well, I've pretty much exhausted my research into this nagging problem.

I have recently uploaded approximately 17gb of files for member downloading on my server. I am using JoomlaXplorer as the download portal and file access and everything else is working perfectly....... except for this one little problem...... from time to time, downloads freeze or lockup and fail to resume. One must cancel download and try again. Sometimes a third attempt is required.

The problem seems to be intermittent and it never happens using an ftp program. I have called my web-host and I am not even at 10% of my allocated bandwidth for the month and they claim the maximum user log-ins are set at 50. I've never had more than 10 members logged-in at any given one time, so, I can almost conclude that it is not a bandwidth nor a "too many users" issue.

I know this is not RT related however, I am hoping that some of my Brothers and Sisters out there in the RTTC World might have experienced this and therefore posses a workable solution.

      Known facts:
      Shared hosting (go-daddy)
1000TB of monthly bandwidth (currently using less than 25% for total month)
      Linux server
Files range in size from 2mb to 50mb
intermittent download errors through browser download
I have not been able to reproduce errors through ftp software download
frequent errors through joomlaXplorer as well as simple url links

Here's a link to my forum where you can read some concerns from my members and the links if you want to test some links.

Any insights or experience with this type of problem is greatly appreciated!

      Thanks in advance,

      a very confused

    • is it the joomlaXplorer and if not have you asked your host if they have download limits set or anything. on shared you can rtun into bottlenecks cause your probably hooked with 120 other sites on your server. If your running ten DL's at once you might hang up. try askign to be moved to a lighter load server. Meaning ione where theres not as many other peopel on it.

I use a host aht gives me that option. Mos tpeopel dont have downloads and stuff. But for the oens that do they have lighter packed servers. jsut a thoguht. plus im on OC12 Loops so i have no concerns with my host.

    • I don't think it is joomlaXplorer because if I post a simple url to a file... the same thing happens, intermittent freeze-ups.

I called my host and they claim it's not them... They told me that they do have file upload limits of 50mb from non-ftp users. These limits are not affected by users properly logged-in using ftp.

They also told me that they limit the number of consecutive "log-ins" at 50. Considering that I really NEVER have more than 10 members logged-in at any given time, I don't that is an issue either.

The bandwidth issue is a difficult subject. They will not tell me the "live" bandwidth specs, only the monthly allocated... so it is difficult to know if this is the problem. What my host tells me is that during times of high server-loads, the downloads should stop but the download speed may be reduced. This kinda makes sense because bandwidth normally gets divided by the number of users. (ie. BW=MAXBW/#users).

I have experimented with Download Accelerator Plus and have experienced better performance. Is this because browser downloads use "passive" downloading and "DAP" use "persistent?" If so, and this cures my problem, I may recommend this to my members.

      Thanks for the help!

    • If you are using DAP then you know it opens multiple connections. Your users may be using it. A browser isn't 1 connection, it opens multiples. I doubt that's the problem.

How much do you pay per month for hosting? That's probably your biggest issue.

You might want to consider using a free file service. filefront.com rapidshare.com or something like it. there are a bunch of them out there.

    • I may have found a solution to my problem.. My hosting service has a "dedicated IP" option for their hosting. I signed up for that and they said it should solve my problems...

      XX fingers are crossed!
