inspiration, how do you do it?

    • hello,
I have a maybe silly question, but I wonder how you get your inspiration to change a template. I'll try to explain what I mean: before Joomla I made custom css/xhtml sites, and so it was possible to design the whole site in the way I wanted it. Now with Joomla and the fantastic rockettheme templates you have already the basics and all you have to do is change some things to come to something new. But .. it sounds simpler then it is in practice.
So I wonder, how do you do it? Say, for instance you have a client who wants a pastoral counselor site. How do you tackle this?
My current workflow is: first look at a template that can do the job. then change the header etc. But it remains a struggle.

I wonder how people here tackle the job.

      thanks,
      Sander

    • Like most things, it is context dependant! Certain small "community" sites are fine with the almost original Rocket Theme template with a few header changes *miniscule* in Fireworks.

However, when I attempt a full make over :o (God dread the thought) - i would start with the main source and edit it how i would like my customisation to appear like then work from there

    • Cruise the Internet looking for sites that I like (or that my client likes). Look through the winners, then look through the RT demo site. Repeat that process several times.

After doing that, I get an idea of what template to start with, and what sort of modifications might be appropriate to make to it.

      Very nice work!

No, the puppy was not harmed. I found that little guy at the stock exchange, and when I emailed his owner so that she could see what I did with her picture, she wrote back to say that she really liked it.

Thus far, I have been getting mostly positive feedback, although I still feel like my content is rough around the edges.

      thanks for the tips.
everytime I come across a good design I make a screenshot of it (with help of the screengrab extension) for the necessary inspiration. But it is still difficult to make the connection between the designs and the rockettemplates. But I think it is simply a lot of try and error to find the solutiion.

    • Just outsource the project to an obscure fledgling company in Micronesia and take the credit--that's what Andy does--isn't it?

      lol just kidding.

That is the most significant problem to tackle in the business. the very first thing to do and I cannot emphasise it enough, is to listen to your client. I mean really listen. In the past, when sites were bland and unimaginative (see jambowork.com .... I AM JUST KIDDING again), clients really didn't know what they wanted because they didn't know the possibilities.

Now, however, the client usually knows that "type" or "look and feel" they want and it is up to you to get it out of them. Ask them to provide a few sample sites that they like, then you can consult on the selection and make suggestive modifications. After that, look for a Rockettheme offering that most closely fits the bill. (If all that doesn't work, I happen to know that Andy and the gang will make a custom site at the drop of a hat for you. ;) ) not really...but there are soooo many diverse RT plates that you would be hard pressed not to find the right fit. I know I always find what I need.

    • Most clients find it easier to have a visual reference. Thats why its always best to try and get a working example to make it easier for you.
