    Wait for Joomla 1.6?

Posted 14 years 9 months ago
    • Hello,

I'm not the most experienced at these things, so wanted to ask for some advice. First of all, I am NOT asking if you are updating the templates to Joomla 1.6. I read the forums and know you are. What I am asking is whether I should wait for a 1.6 RocketLauncher to start a new site since I am still at beginner level. I am working on a few sites, but none are urgent. The latest update on the Joomla site regarding the 1.6 release is:
Our best "guess" for the availability of future versions is late summer of 2010 for the first stable version.

If that happens then I would expect the new RocketLaunchers to available by the end of the year. If I can get these sites up and configured by the end of the year then that's good enough for me.

So I guess the question centers around if you think it will be a "simple" upgrade from a 1.5 RocketLauncher install to a 1.6 template. If there will be guides, etc. then I'm fine with that. If I will need to know CSS/HTML and do my own things then I will struggle.

I suppose waiting also has the added benefit of using a template RocketLauncher install for something that hasn't come out yet. However, I expect if I've already used a RocketLauncher install (Gantry one), then it's not that big of a deal to switch over to another.

      Thanks.

      JT

    • AFAIK, it still hasn't been determined if it's going to be an upgrade or a migration from J1.5 to J1.6 but from what I read (a while ago) it was looking like migration.

If it's a migration you'll have to move the entire site to a 1.6 install, not install an update or upgrade as you would with an extension or version update.

I know this thread pertains to J1.0 > J1.5, just FYI.

    • I've done some more digging around the Joomla site and it looks like this is still unclear. It does sound pretty major though as the database structure is different. However, with all of the Joomla sites out there, I would expect that to be made easier by someone.

I'll just work on my stuff online and wait for a bit. As I said above, it gives me the chance to see what other amazing templates come out between now and the time the 1.6 RocketLaunchers are completed.

    • By the way, I found a great blog by one of the developers that has lots of good stuff on it (videos of new 1.6 features, etc):

Well, I'm sure when the time comes joomla.org will give clear instruction for migration as they did for J1.0 > J1.5.

But when that time does come, I suggest backing up your site(s) and practicing on localhost or a sub folder of your site before you do the actual conversion.
