image link won't open as a popup

I've found the oddest issue and not sure how to solve it. I have a audio player that I have built to open with a javascript popup when the link is clicked. Easy enough... I've created a javascript file, loaded the script info in the header of the template. I created a module with an image "Listen" and inserted the link, but it goes to basically a blank page - If I load the same link: javascript:openpopup('http:/mysite.net/players/mysite/player.html') into a menu item and use the external link function it works just fine! Go figure.
I've tried this a couple of different ways - I used mod_customcontent, mod_custom and mod_j15html - thinking maybe it was the script creating the issue, but none of them work. I can mouse over the image and see the correct link, but it won't open at all - Is there a secret here I'm missing? I've tested this in various templates, including one that is not RocketTheme (this particular theme is a custom gantry theme). The issue is obviously not a theme issue, as the same issue arises in all cases, but I think it's with the more recent releases of Joomla. Version here is 1.5.18 - (I also tested it on a site that is running 1.5.15 - same issue) . I thought since I'm a member, I would post here first before going to the main Joomla site (which I did search without joy).
I have other popups I would like to create for other purposes, so I really need to solve this. I have a couple of custom help files that I want to create and would like to include a help icon in the article and have it open a popup, but until I solve this issue, I can't make that happen, not to mention I have several other players to setup.
Any suggestions would really be welcomed.
