I am building a new site for a news paper. I am new to doing this for clients but after doing a this as a donation to a local project i was hooked. I have done lots of research and a great deal of figuring out what is needed I just need your opinions on what extensions are best for that i have in mind.
the following are the features i am looking to have.
Search
well this sounds simple enough but I would like to have an advanced search link that would open a page with a number for search features
-tag cloud: the tags in the cloud will be of recently searched tags but also tags with a high hit count.
-advance search options and parameters like: by date or period, by location (i plan to also use tags to filter news items for a specific location), section
Members & subscriptions
-staff: I will need a multi tier member system to allow items to be submitted --> edited by editor(s) --> moderated (when members comment on items).
-member: membership is subscription based; members will have the ability to read news items, comment and share items on social networking sites, they will have profiles so some sort of mild social features. I am not sure about how to set up payment options or what companies are good for online collections. So some advice here would be good.
Multimedia
this one i think i got but maybe i will learn something new.
-Photos: display galleries and pics in news items
-Video:
sounds: there maybe some sound bites
advertising
I need a good banner system. I have never done this before so i have no idea.
Back-end
I need a nice admin extension that will allow the staff to work efficiently.

Just my 2 cents, but this list is HUGE, and none of it is template related.
IMHO, you need to do more research, check out what 3rd party extensions are available for what you want to do, or consider hiring someone to take on the project.
