Does RT still support ie 6 for it's templates?

  • Does RT still support ie 6 for it's templates?

    • I was just wondering if RocketTheme is still supporting IE 6 with it's templates or not. I have had a few problems with my rockettheme templates and IE 6 in the last month or so, and have posted 3-4 questions about the problems I am having here in the forums. I have not gotten any response to the questions, much less any sort of solution. One of my bigger problems is that my shopping cart does not fit inside the content area of my rockettheme template. I tried asking for help in the virtuemart forum, but got no answers on it there. That made me wonder, because if I got no responses to the post, that means that it's not a common thing that is happening. So I loaded up one of the tempaltes that came with joomla, "madeforweb" or something like that, then went to my cart page, and everything was fine. So I then realized that I was not going to get much help from the virtuemart forum, because this is a problem that is only showing up in rockettheme templates, so it's not a problem with the cart itself. I then posted the problem here, since it is only happening in templates from here, but again, I got no responses. While searching the forums for an answer on the problems I am coming across in IE while using RT templates, I stumbled onto a post of someone asking how well RT templates do if they are being viewed with IE 5.5, and I saw a response from Andy:
John, i'm afraid we've not supported IE5.5 in a long time. It's just too old, with really bad CSS support. not to mention all the security issues and the fact that it's no longer updated or supported by microsoft.

So now I am wondering, is IE 6 still supported? If it is not, then that may explain why the posts I make about problems I am having with the templates in IE 6 are not getting responses. If it is still supported, could someone please take a moment to see why the cart messes up in RT templates, and why 2 out of 3 of the modules I have placed in my top module bar are not showing up in IE 6?

Here is a screen shot of the cart page shown in 2 different templates, this will show you one of the problems I am speaking of.

Thank you for your time to read this and any responses you may feel like contributing:)

    • at first glance it looks to be caused by a fluid right colum. Have you tried giving the right panel a fixed width in your css?

      EDIT:
This doesn't seem to be the problem.

I would recommend working on virtuemart ... Look for the VM file responsible for the cart and give the main containing table a fixed width.

      EDIT:
This is the very first line after the copyright info on the page
      /public_html/administrator/components/com_virtuemart/html/templates/basket/basket_b2c.html.php
      <table width="100%" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="4" border="0">
Try putting a fixed width there... maybe 620px or thereabouts.

Disclaimer: I have never used VM on a live site before and have next to nil experience with it so please don't laugh if i got it all wrong.

    • Vortex and IE6 are not the best of friends. There were a few items that got passed over in Vortex. At one time Andy said there was going to be a 1.03 version but it never happened. I was going to use Vortex on my VM site and had to abandon it, mostly because of IE issues. I ended up with Elixer and it's.... well.... not as nice as I had hoped. (I'm currently reworking the site with a non-RT template and it's coming along, I'd toss a link but it's offline dev atm.)

In the administrator/components/com_virtuemart/html/templates/... directories there are extra templates in each sub-directory. Some are fluid, some are fixed. Just play around with the choices and you'll find which ones work best with which templates. I found a few more than what was included by surfing around a bit.

You can actually make some great changes to the showcase (browse_1-5) and the flypage (product-details). I got lightbox working on my product thumbnails [all 20,000 of them] pretty easily.

    • I have done that already Mack. I made my own browse page, called it browse_9.php. That's why my browse page has a much nicer look than the standard VM one. I went with a style that was easier on the eyes and that was inspired by the latest products page that the site hydroponics.ie uses on it's frontpage. I also have slimbox working for my view larger images link, but I haven't uploaded any of the images at the moment, because of my bosses wishes that the large images should not be able to be saved by right clicking and saving as. So rather than having all sorts of work to do after I figure out the image protection with slimbox (rather if I ever figure out a way of protecting the images in slimbox), I figured that I would do all of the work with uploading the products and so on first, and just not upload the large images to the site until I figure out how to add some simple protection to them. That way everything else is already done, and all I have to do is upload the images and it will be complete.

      Back to the topic though,
It seems the problem is RT templates and 100% width tables. The problem is not just with virtuemart pages, I have it on any page that I have a table width set to 100%. I just made a new content item page, it's in my testimonials section, and it uses tables on it and some are set to 100%. I wasn't paying much attention and just got the page all setup and saved it lastnight (it was late, after midnight, and I was tired). This afternoon my boss comes to me and says "Your new pages borke the site layout again." I was confused and asked him which page, he replies "All of the new ones you made." So I look at the pages, in Firefox mind you, since that is the browser I use by default. I notice that the page is even broken in firefox, because there is a table set to 100% width, and it is pushing the content area a bit too far to the right, taking up some of the space allocated for the right module column. So it's not only an Internet Explorer issue, it's a tables set to 100% width and vortex template issue. I am posting a screen shot of the page, in firefox, to the end of this post. If anyone knows how to fix this problem the templates seem to have with relative size set tables, please let the secret out!

      Thank you,

    • Just take the 100% and make it 800px or whatever the appropriate width is for your site.

    • Ok after some playing with Firebug,

You have 3 images on there in divs where the width of the div is set to 650.

This is pushing your content out of the 100% because the 100% width is about 600.

Find those three 650 width divs and change them to 600. It should fix your problem.

btw that Javascript is as annoying as heck when I am trying to diagnose the site. 'Images are copyrighted!' popping up all the time.

Can't you just disable the copy or download without putting up the alert box?

    • btw the three divs are your header logo, and the two bars in the footer.

    • Thanks a ton Daniel! The header was ok, being at 620px, however the bottom customer service tag had bars that were at 650px. This is actually a problem we had a month or two ago and fixed, making a new tag down there, with bars that were 625px wide instead of the 650. Well, when my buddy setup that page layout to give to me so I could put it into joomla, he accidently used the old customer service tag we had, rather than the new one we made to fix the width problem. So, as I said, thanks a ton for pointing that out to me!:) Also, since you were so quick to figure out the problem there, would you mind taking a look my cart page and seeing if you see what is causing it to do pretty much the same thing as these pages were, but only in IE 6? I haven't been able to figure out the problem there, and I've posted the problem here in a few different ways, but haven't gotten a response..and it's been a few weeks. The problem happening in IE has the unfortunate side effect of not being able to use firebug to diagnose it. I also noticed that the problem is not there if you view the page with firefox or IE 7. So if you could give any insight on the issue on the cart page, it would be greatly appreciated:)

      Thank you,
      David Henderson

      P.S.
Trust me, I know the no right clicking on images is REALLY annoying, but my boss said that it must be that way, and being my boss, I had to do it. I told him that the protection it offers is only an illusion and that if anyone wanted the pictures, they could easily turn off their javascript, or look at the source code for the file path, or just print screen and paste into an image editor program, or any of a thousand different things. He replied with the fact that he wants the ability to right click the image and "save as" to not be available because he is trying to stop his competitors from taking his images and using them on their pages or ebay listings, and that most of them don't know enough to try and do anything other than right click the image and save it from there, so having that little illusion of image protection will stop at least 75% of his competitors from getting the images. However, I agree that it does little more than serve as an annoyance to browsers of the site:(

    • Yeah I know why you did it, I have been following your other posts. What I was mainly asking is if you need the popup or can just disable the copy function.

But I guess people wouldn't be right clicking on images unless they are copying them... (or trying to debug a problem :p )

Why does the cart break in IE6? Easy answer. IE6 suxs... it suxs badly. If it wasn't for the earlier and even worse releases of IE, it would be the single worst browser ever released.

Have you tried putting a fixed width on the body?

I will take a look at it when I finish work and get home. (in about 8-10 hours)

But I can pretty much guarantee it will be something in the CSS, which is overflowing, i.e. is too big for it's parent container for some reason.

    • Well the cart is from virtuemart. I tried changing the cart table to a fixed width, and the table then fit on the page. However, There is another part on the bottom of the page, that has the links for you to continue shopping or to checkout, that still broke the page. I couldn't find the file that dealt with the sizing of that area. I tried posting on the virtuemart forums, but no one has responded there, so then I tried posting the question here, and again no response...of course I didn't expect an answer here, was just being hopeful for one. Let me go find the post here and I'll link to it....be right back. Ok, here is the post I made in the vortex forum about my problems.

      http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?t=10955&rb_v=viewtopic

I posted a few questions about it, pertaining to different problems I am having, but all related to the same issue. Maybe there is something in the post or something you can see in the screen shots that will give you a little more help with the issue. If you have any questions, or you need to know about any of the files or code or anything, feel free to ask away:) Heck, if you need to see the admin backend for the site, let me know and I'll make you an admin account for it. Anyways, thanks for the help...hopefully we can figure this out and get it resolved, because I am sure that there are others out there having a problem related to this issue.

      Thank you again,
      David Henderson
