    Please Kick-start me (post RocketLauncher)

Posted 14 years 5 months ago
    • Ok, I installed Paradox via RocketLauncher. My understanding is that I can use RL to start, all the cool features are already installed (the plugins, and the menu system, and scrolling areas, etc.) Then I'd just need to change category names to match my needs, find the articles and change the names and text, and have a working site.

Maybe I'm mistaken? Because I can't find where to edit the text that will actually change what is seen on the website.

I've even gone as far as "unpublishing" all the sample data categories as well as all the articles, but everything still shows up on the home page..

So I know this is a really newbie request, but can someone please just kick-start me.. maybe I'm not wrapping my head around the specifics of the RocketTheme template and/or the way they've set up the Sample Data... I simply can't find what to change in order to make the website itself change!?

    • Usually you will find that stuff in 3 places: Menu Manager, Article Manager & Module Manager.
    • Please reply with a direct link to the issue & create a new thread for each new issue.

    • Ahh, ok so just to save time, I disabled all the modules, and most of the content disappeared from the site. I then looked and most of the modules are "mod_custom" meaning they are just typed right in the modules (ie. not posting info from an article, which is why when I unpublished articles, the page didn't change).

I'm wondering if it will be easier to just delete everything and start fresh, but leave things like the scrolling box at the top, etc.

I've always hated "starting" a website - all those decisions you make up-front while trying to think of every possible future consideration -- kinda makes you NOT want to make those decisions! :)

    • What I usually do is...

      A) Install a copy of the RL with sample data on localhost or a sub folder of the site for reference
      B) Install a copy of the latest Gantry RL without the sample data, then apply the template w/o sample data, then apply the template and extensions to it.

Then I build the site on B using A as a reference.

      Described here...

      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=2&t=104899&rb_v=viewtopic

I always like starting from scratch as opposed to deleting / editing due to the complexity of the demos... delete a Section, Category, Article, Menu, Module and you get some kind of error because it's linked from somewhere else you don't know about....

    • K, thanks JEM... I think I'm going to start over because I sort of deleted a menu of some sort and now my home page is 404 not found.

that said, I need some basic menu setup already prepared because I'm not that experienced at Joomla and I don't think I can figure out how to start completely from scratch. So, would I do as it says on your link, except maybe install the sample data (joomla's sample data, not RTs)... that will at least get me "started" (in the past, I've always installed Joomla with their sample data and worked from there, so at least its' a common starting point for me).

The only problem with that is the standard Joomla position do not match that of the newer templates, i.e., there is not left, right, user1, user2, etc. in Gantry.

So even if you use the sample data from Joomla, the content is not going to show properly in showcase-a, sidebar-a, content-top-a, etc. .... So you will still be in the same position...

Starting from scratch is really not so bad, take a look at these links, they may give you some ideas.
