Theme Installation Problem

I am trying to install the Omnicron bundle and I am experiencing some problems. When I try to "Upload Package File" the browser just hangs and thinks. When I try to "Install from Directory" it gives me the following error message:
JInstaller::install: ERRORXMLSETUP
Unable to detect manifest file
Component Install: Error
Component Install: Error
Component Install: Custom install routine failure
Whenever I try to "Upload Package File" on another demo site it is hit or miss, sometimes it installs successfully and other times the browser just hangs.
I am running Joomla! 1.5.22, PHP 5.2.14, and MySQL 4.1.25. All of my FTP settings look to be functioning correctly and my PHP post_max_size is at 20M. I am stumped at what the issue is. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, it worked (I think). Although, when I installed the omicron theme, It produced the following error message:
Error Loading ModulesMySQL server has gone away SQL=SELECT id, title, module, position, content, showtitle, control, params FROM jos_modules AS m LEFT JOIN jos_modules_menu AS mm ON mm.moduleid = m.id WHERE m.published = 1 AND m.access <= 2 AND m.client_id = 1 ORDER BY position, ordering
Is this something I should be concerned with?
The Gantry Bundle needed to be installed from the directory as the Upload Package File function did not work.
