    Drupal 7 or Joomla 1.6

Posted 14 years 4 months ago
    • Hi,

With the release of Drupal 7, I'm debating switching CMS products. I love Joomla, but the constant search for extensions is a bit tiresome. My impression (which could be wrong) is that Drupal provides a lot more core functionality (built in CCK, for example). Is anyone having similar thoughts? Be curious as the what the experts think on Drupal 7 vs Joomla 1.6....

Not yet. we are working on converting all of our themes to D7. We will continue to support D6 as well and continue to release themes that are D6 compatible.

We will begin releasing D7 versions soon as well as D6 versions.

We have not defined a timeline just yet.

    • MaybeNot,

(I have no idea what question JEM was trying to answer...)

In answer to YOUR question, I have worked with both Drupal 7 and the Joomla 1.6 RC. You sound as if you are very comfortable with Joomla. If that is true I would stick with Joomla. There is quite a steep learning curve with Drupal, even Drupal 7.

Also the RocketTheme themes for Drupal do not seem as stable as the Joomla Themes. They also use MooTools in the Drupal themes, which has in the past caused some conflicts with the JQuery used by Drupal.

Basically offering some insight, nothing more.

We have hundreds of requests for the latest templates being compatible with the latest version of what ever CMS is out there, often with members never considering that all of the 3rd party component they use are not yet compatible with the latest version of what is out there.

Or, questions concerning making a switch from one CMS to another w/o considering if there are components that will make a switch to a new CMS function in the same manner as there current site / extensions do.

      Just food for thought...
    • Thanks,

    • Jem,

Makes sense. Upgrading a CMS to a new release (as opposed to a security patch) is certainly not something someone should automatically/immediately do. Unless you're just experimenting with a non-production site you're just asking for trouble.

    • Thanks for the info. I'll certainly start learning Drupal, as it looks interesting (and challenging). I knew people had strong feelings on each one, but that post was too funny...

    • Well here is my personal opinion...

I have used both CMS's for large and rather intense projects. Overall, Drupal is by far the winner here for developers who want total freedom, who are willing to spend time and effort into constructing a site, who are able to constantly maintain it, and nurture it. From past experience, Drupal sites require a lot of back end work. They can be buggier than Joomla! on the whole, but only because if you're using Drupal - you're more likely to be playing with files to get what you want. It's great to modify, but by default, doesn't have all the pre-packaged features Joomla! has, that are readily available.

I purchased JomSocial for my site about a month ago exactly .. and wow, with this magnificent piece of software, there is no way I'm switching back to Drupal any time soon! Of course, the features JomSocial provide are much more advanced than the default member system Drupal provides.

So to sum it up, if you have some money, and want to spend some time interacting with your users, promoting your site, etc, then go for Joomla!. If you're a developer and are looking for something you can constantly maintain from the outset, go with Drupal. Both are good and have their own strengths, but this is what does it for me:

      Joomla! 1.5
      JomSocial 2.0
      JFusion, bridged with phpBB3
      A few minor modifications
A lovely copy of Joomla 1.6's Admin Panel to spice up the 1.5 Admin Panel with a bit of eye candy ;)
And last but not least... A very active community with lots of happy members :cheesy:

Oh, and one more thing... About Joomla! 1.6. I'm using 1.5, because I'm using a RT template and can't switch just yet in that case. I'm not actually even planning to switch. I'm happy with how things are running on my site with 1.5. I have about 5-10 3rd party plugins installed, and yet my site appears very advanced. My suggestion would be not to jump into 1.6 right now. Especially if you want to dress it up in an awesome RT template. ;)

      Go Joomla! :)
