    Bridge 1.5 and 1.6?

Posted 14 years 4 months ago
    • I like everyone else is looking forward to using 1.6 and my big thing would be access control. However, even though I am sure RT will have a stable version of my template in the very near future, it's going to be a while before all my components, modules, and plugins are ready for 1.6.

So my question is this - I would like to make a parallel (twin) site that is 1.6 that looks and feels like my 1.5 site. I would need my 1.5 users to also be in my 1.6 installation and log-ins to be bridged so they can go back and forth until all my 1.5 toys will work on 1.6.

Can anyone think of the best way to do this?

    • I don't think there is any ready solution to this except wait until templates and plugins are ready for 1.6 and then upgrade your site.

      What's the rush anyway? 8)

I have a LOT of components, modules, and plugins. Currently I am using component to "Hide" some articles from anyone that is not on a certain user list.

I have allot of other uses for access control, none of which really involve all the components, etc. so it would be handy.

    • Then use Akeeba and do a full backup of your site and install it on your local server and play around there. When you're done you should be able to just pull the new registrations of users from the db and then insert it to your dev site.

When all is done you can just upload/install it with Akeeba.

    • Besides, Joomla won't be real stable for a good couple of months anyway. It's released as "stable" but... ;)

    • Prim has given you solid advice...

AFAIK, you can't 'bridge' between two install of Joomla.

If it is in fact possible, searching or posting on joomla.org would be best as this is not template related.

Andy's post here explains the need for J1.5 > J1.6 changes in detail.

      www.rockettheme.com/blog

I see no reason to have users have the option to swap between two versions if you have a lot of 3rd party components that are not yet J1.6 compatible, i.e., click on the J1.5 link and everything is great, click on the J1.6 link and a good portion of the site is broken.

Who wants visitors to see that?

Honestly, test J1.6 on a dev site (when the templates are ready) and test all your components on the dev site as well.

When J1.6, the template(s), and all the components you use are ready, then you can make the switch.

    • I understand, I just thought that if there were a way to bridge the log ins, you guys would know and it would be a nice way to pass the time waiting......
