How to choose template

    • Hello,

I am rebuilding my site and do not know which template to choose. I know that Gantry allows for many changes, but I am not sure which elements are easy to change, which are more difficult.

So I have some questions which is more important or more easy to change:

      - components included - is it better to choose template that has more usefull components for me (like ex. Syndicate) or it does not matter, it is easy to add some modules - how easy is it

      - general outlook and colours - I read that it is easy to change backgroud colour but there are many colours for modules - is it better to choose templates that does not need so much changes? For example Hybrid is pretty interesting template but almost all elements are dark colour so no style would fit my expectation - so is it point for not choosing Hybrid?

      - Fonts in module headers

      - Logo - I read that in Gantry we can put logo in any module - I like this opportunity because my logo is rounded and if I put it on top banner it become to high.

I need my site for movement meditation purposes, workshops etc.
I prefer not very dark colours and quite clean interfase (like Panacea, but it has very high top panel, not so much convinient for small laptop displays).
I would also like to choose from newest templates because they have newer Gantry version.
I like Rok News Pager module, Rok Stories or maybe Rocke Feature table.
I need something like content tags and blog look in some categories.
I also wanted that few people will be ablo to edit their own article (bio) from frontend side and I am not sure if Joomla 1.5 is convenient for it, I heard that in 1.6 are big changes on this part.

So I do not know what to choose and as you can see I am not easy decision person.
If you have any suggestions, I'll be grateful.
      Joanna

      So which one choose?

    • Might want to a have a look at the Dec. 2010 template Paradox - Preset #8: demo.rockettheme.com/?template=paradox

Paradox is a light template and that seems the design direction you are heading.

It can be a bear to modify a dark theme and make it light. Reversing the color of the fonts is not as easy at it appears and also there are certain design elements that are built with images so templates that have a dark theme might not have any light design elements so you'd have to make your own in Fireworks.

      Best of luck!

    • Thank you so much. I was thinking about Paradox, so now I will consider it even closer while maybe waiting just one week for what is comming next (not longer).

And thanks for the explanation about fonts and colours. It will make the choice much easier. That is what I would like to avoid - having to change graphic elements of the template.

      Best luck for you too,
      Joanna

    • It's not a big hassle of changing a light theme to dark or vice versa.
I made a dark mynxx for example, i maybe gonna share on the user contribs later.

    • Depends on the template and what's available in the user controls (Gantry) and how much CSS and images you want to modify. Some templates are easy to convert and some are not. My advice is to start with a template that is somewhat close to the look you want.

That mynxx template looks nice...thanks for pointing that out!

    • I will be sharing it next week. An exclusive version of mynxx

    • So I will be waiting, but anyway it is dark version.

I have now customized Replicant2 www.livingdanceform.pl but this is not Gantry powered, I was not updating it for long time, so when I updated it lately there were not update from my version. So I even do not know if there are no bugs. Reinstalling will lose all customisation that somebody make me two years ago.
I changed background (that was very colorfull) and I do not know, maybe I should just upload some new modules and stay with it until more stable Joomla 1.6 or the moment I could invest in some help.

      Best wishes,
      Joanna

    • Hi,

afret reading Joomla 1.6 posts, I will wait for more stable version and extensions, and now I will use 1.5. I wish there is an easy way to copy all the content to the template that was installed with Rocket Launcher. Now you have to do it all manually.

Anyway, what do you recommend now, when new template was released - Tachion or Paradox?
