Hi guys
I've been using rockettheme templates for nearly a year now (about to go to professional member) and have always done my sites live because Joomla and these themes are so easy to use and they go up quick.
I now have a client who wants a site but doesn't want it live until it is finished but he wants to be able to see it and check its progress.
I was just wondering how you wonderful experts out there achieve this. How do you do it and what other things do you use to do it.
Set up a development site that is on a different address?
Or you could try not setting up the web dns for the domain name, and only use the ip for the site to access it.
I have never tested this, but I think if you set the 'Site Offline:" parameter to be yes, then admin or super admins can still see it but anyone else gets a 'site offline' message.
Maybe... (but then again, how do you login so it can recognise you as an admin?)

This is not a fool-proof solution but I always add an index.html page to the Joomla directory before launching a site. That way when the user hits the site the index.html file is accessed instead of the Joomla index.php page. Then when you want to edit the Joomla site, simply type in /index.php. Then remove the index.html file when you're ready to go live.
Okay, I've gone with the index.html page to "hide" my live site while I create it - you can see it here:

My next question is what ftp programs do people use and why. And is there a ftp program that can upload a zip/tar file that will unpack itself? Hmm and are they free? ;D
