Can we have alternative to 960grid?

Posted 14 years 1 week ago
    • Every month the styles change, but the template layout is exactly the same.

Is there any chance we can see an alternative to the 960grid, or just abandon the idea of a fix template layout grid, altogether?

Example J****art makes templates with a wide "right" column which can be sub-divided into left/right column positions. So, you might have a 300px wide ad on the right, with two left/right column module areas and another 300px module (spanning the full width of the left/right columns.

Right now, something like this is impossible with the 960grid, because there is just Sidebar A, B, C.

Well, to be honest, it's not impossible... one could just have an extra wide Sidebar A and then use something like Nonumber's "load module" code to load two separate modules, side-by-side within Sidebar A.

I just have to wonder if anyone else has expressed any concern over being locked into the 960grid? Of course, I understand that this type of consistency makes Gantry possible (though I could argue against that one, too...).

It just feels like every month we are just seeing the release of new theme styles under one template - the 960grid. Ugh, that sounds like I'm belittling Rockettheme's work... that's not what I'm trying to do here.

Is there a possibility that future templates will not rely on the 960grid, or is this the standard from here on out?
