Template installation issues

  • Template installation issues

    • I'm building my 2nd joomla site, and remember from my first one that there were quite a bit of permissions fixes that I had to make. However, then I had server access and was able to go in and tinker around on my own til everything was fixed. On this site that I'm building I only have access to joomla, not to the server itself (and as of now not even to the FTP) so I don't want to bug the people at my customers host too much.

I was unable to install a template yesterday, and just looked at my directory permissions and they are ALL unwritable. I am using joomla 1.6.3

What do I need to tell him to change so that I can have full ability to install this template and any mods that I need

      Thanks
      Melissa

    • Talk about having your hands tied behind your back - rebuild my transmission PRONTO and here's your hammer
I would tell your client you NEED access to the server, database and FTP info.

From your description it sounds like their server is using a Web Server to PHP interface = apache2handler without SuPHP. Basically this means that the Apache server thinks IT'S the owner of the files, so that Joomla then doesn't have access rights to those files even though permissions are proper.

The best scenario to fix this is add SuPHP to their account. This software would allow the PHP CGI to 'su' [switch user] upon request between it's own owner account and another resource account, most commonly the owner of the file requesting the 'su'.

The alternative solution would be to attempt in Global Configuration -> Site -> Enable FTP layer. This would require you to know the login info for the FTP account on that server.

    • Ok, well, I got the FTP info and was able to change all the permissions, I got the template installed (hybrid 1.6) but had an error message (I'm an idiot and didnt copy the message though), it did say that the template was installed successfully.

Now when I click in the template manager on hybrid to change the preferences, i get this

500 - An error has occurred.
Unable to use given directory. Check file permissions.

      Return to Control Panel

I went on the ftp to change permissions on the rt_hybrid_j16 directory to 777 or 766 and get
Fetch could not set permissions for "rt_hybrid_j16" because the FTP server sent an unexpected response.

Check the fetch transcript window for more information. Server responded "CHMOD 777 rt_hybrid_j16: Operation not permitted"

I looked at this, in my Global Configuration -> Site, there is no option for Enable FTP layer??

There is an Enable FTP (no layer) under Server though

Sorry didn't notice the Joomla 1.6.3, you're correct the location is different. As far as permissions go, the optimal setting is folders at 755 and files at 644.

    • I also have a problem with permissions. I have Joomla 1.7 with the Hybrid template J17 loaded. All permissions have been changed to: folders 755 and files have been changed to 644. I still can not get the template to work, I am getting the 500 - An error has occurred. I have worked yesterday and today with my host company and they do not know what else to do. The suPHP is not and will not be turned on. Please tell me where to go from here.

Since there was no response from the OP on this one, you deserve your own thread so I'm moving it to the General forum of Hybrid -> http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=424&t=141676&p=701858&rb_v=viewtopic#p701858

    • Hi I have a simillar problem.
      I installed Reflex RocketLauncher J17.
      It says:
This package contains a full Joomla 1.7 install as well as the Reflex template and demo sample content allowing you to easily deploy a streamlined copy of the Reflex demo site with a few clicks.

But everytime I'm trying to edit the template it says:
500 - An error has occurred.
Unable to use given directory. Check file permissions.

I have changed directory permissions for templates and rt_reflex_j16 folders, but the error massage is still there.

May I ask you to help me?
      Thanks
      Sol.
