    Multiple Templates on Same Domain

Posted 13 years 10 months ago
    • Is it possible for me to install more then 1 template on the same domain name and server for testing purposes without messing up any existing content?

I would assume that wouldn't be a problem but wouldn't want to proceed until I was sure I wouldn't mess up what was already completed.

Will I run in to any problems with more then one installed for testing?

    • Hi, it shouldn't be a problem. You can even assign the templates to appear on different pages of your existing site using the template manager or just switch between them as you choose. As far as I know, you can have as many as you like without issue.

    • Doing so the only 'problem' will be with different templates having different Module positions.

I.e., if you are testing applying templates to a site and the Module names and positions don't match, then some of your content won't be visible when you make the switch unless you are sure that you publish the Modules to the new positions for the template you are using.

If you are testing Gantry / Gantry templates, this may not be a problem, since the template positions are standardized.

    • What happens if I wanna complete install including joomla for the second template?

Can I deploy one to high level install folder then the second to a secondary folder ../public_folder/joomla/second template?

    • Do you mean installing another copy of Joomla in a sub directory? You can do that, just as long as every installation is in it's own folder and your hosting allows for multiple databases, which it should. The only danger is keeping track of all the logins, database info ECT.

    • Okay, just wanted to make sure. On one of my personal development servers I have more than 10 different installs of Joomla, all in subdirectories, mainly for demo purposes, and I've never had any issue. You just have to keep all the info organized, it can get out of hand if you don't have a plan.

    • Thanks Cliff. So if I have 1 template installed in the root and want to test another I just install the second template in root/template2/joomla files. I would assume then to install the template it would be www.yourwebsite/template/installation

      Correct?

    • Yep, it's exactly the same as the first, just with the extra directory in the path.

    • With localhost or your server, you can create multiple installs as Chris has mentioned.

For localhost, I organize all my template within htdocs.

For the RT templates, I've created an 'RT' directory within the 'htdocs' directory, and have then named each folder for installs appropriately.

(I have other directories within htdocs for other platforms / projects.)

The same method will work on your server, as long as you can create multiple DBs, one for each install, and keep them organized within the root.

Again, as Chris mentioned, keeping them separate, and keeping DB details / logins organized is the key.
