iStockPhoto Question

    • hello guys,

this is more for the legally minded of you, and those that use IstockPhoto

i have read the licence agreement of istockphoto and im not quite sure how to interpret it

      i read this
      (a) Prohibited Uses. You may not do anything with the Content that is not expressly permitted in the preceding section or permitted by an Extended License. For greater certainty, the following are “Prohibited Uses” and you may not:

      1. use the Content in design template applications intended for resale, whether on-line or not, including, without limitation, website templates, Flash templates, business card templates, electronic greeting card templates, and brochure design templates;

does this allow for use on my website and any GPL templates i should release (if i finally do one)

i would like to know before i purchase credits for the logo i would like to use on my site

if it does prohibit it - it may be worth while me paying for the logo design for me

      thanks in advance

    • The way I interpret it is that you can use the image on your site but if you're going to create a template you are intending to sell, then you're not allowed.

    • Or find a custom designer.

      Much better imo.

Much harder too expecially if you're not sure of exactly what you want and you don't know the artists style etc. Even if you commission some custom stuff I think sites like istockphoto are good to help with ideas + if you've got editing software you can customise vector images yourself.

Did you read through the extended license option on istockphoto? I haven't in detail but I think that allows images to be resold (with some restrictions)

    • Fotolia has an extended Royalty Free license which allows you to use the work for derivative works. Usually it costs more to purchase such an image (i.e. $25 instead od $2) but it's not too bad and beats commissioning work which would cost a lot more than that...

yes, thats why i havnt really considered custom work - it would be way out of my price range, i am wanting to use istock as i have seen a lovely little image i would like to use

aslong as i can use it on my theme i will be happy - i do intend to do my own - but my skills arnt what i need them to be, i intend to learn, so maybe by the end of the year i will have a good logo i have done myself

thanks everyone for the replies, i will check out fotolio

That's why you start on Iphoto, find an artist who's style you like, then commission him to do it for you.

Like I did *points to ninja* I have gotten 6 images from this guys already, love his work and he is timely professional and great to work with. (I need to put him in the designer props thread)

    • thats true - the vector stuff on istockphoto is amazing - most of what I use their site for is the vector stuff - hardly ever photo's. If you can find a good illustrator it'll probably save a load of time too - I spend hours trawling for images (ironically because I'm too impatient to commission!).
