    Unnecessary files being loaded?

Posted 13 years 8 months ago
    • I and quite a few site visitors are having some occasional 'server not available' response when trying to access a site I built using a Rocket Theme. I've raised this with the hosts, TMD Hosting, and they are 'blaming' it on the large number of files that are having to be loaded, and point me at this report.

      http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/?url=http://www.freefilmfestivals.org/index.php/&id=5635017

I appreciate that it's a graphic rich theme and on the RT demo server it still takes longer than your average site to load. My question is, is this a reason for the visitor to get a 'server not available' response?

Also, quite a few of the graphic files (154 images = ~680K) that are loaded are not actually being displayed, when one visits, say, the homepage, so why are they being requested?

      e.g. http://www.freefilmfestivals.org/templates/rt_infuse_j15/images/typo/highlight1.jpg

I've just been reading the thread on 'caching explained' at http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=15&t=92880&rb_v=viewtopic . I have GZip compression turned on in the Global config, but don't have cache turned on. Should turning it on help? When I turn it on and set for 30 mins it doesn't seem to have any effect on a newly generated report, or do I have to wait a while to check this again?

Would appreciate an insight into any way of improving this site load time, or if the hosts are using this as an excuse.

UPDATE: I've removed a few of the fonts that were being called in by @fontface in the css files so it only loads the one I'm using (Bebas). I've also disabled RokBox plugin. Got the Pingdom report down to about 10seconds now and about 1Mb of data. Any other ideas?

    • Personally, I run over 30 Rocket Theme websites on my server without any compression turned on and I have never seen this problem. I've used the same theme with all sorts of images / flash and all the bells and whistles and didn't have any issue. That's just my experience but I would question your hosting plan.

You can test if it's the template by using the default template to see if these issues go away, any Joomla site is going to be loading a lot of files regardless. Using compression and getting rid of files you are not using can only improve your performance, if that doesn't help, I would investigate other hosting options.
