Beware of J!1.7 - I am an idiot to switch !

    • I was finally starting to learn J1.5.

If I did not experience a PHP upgrade that broke my two sites, I would never , ever re-install those sites. Once I realized the only way is to start from scratch, I learned that J!1.5 will be dead next April and J1.6-1.7 was the way to go. So, I started installing 1.6 and 1.7.

I am an idiot ! I am the biggest idiot of all !

For gods sake, I have yet to find a working J1.7 extension that I used in J1.5. None of them are available. No search, no tags, no tabs in articles, no slides in articles.... nothing. Whatever fancy was there, whatever I paid for... none of them are developed to 1.7.

Now, I am expecting the worst. When the next Joomla is released, I am sure none of the extensions I will be using then will be compatible again.

    • I'm confused as to what you were using for Joomla 1.5 to get all of those features that hasn't been converted. The only thing I can think of is K2, but that is on it's way. Zoo from Yootheme is 1.7 compatible and does a pretty decent job of managing content. It does tags and everything. And as for search, RokAjaxSearch is 1.7 compatible and is pretty good.

Tabs and Slides in your content can be done really easily in Joomla 1.7 as it's a built in feature. When you use the "pagebreak" function, you can change the style of it in the pagebreak plugin settings and have it use tabs or slides instead of the old index feature. It's pretty nifty. Failing that, you can always just add the code manually using jQuery or something.

I've just begun moving my clients websites across to 1.7 (where applicable) and so far I've only found a handful of extensions that have not been converted that I really need. On the whole I believe 1.7 is a huge step forward for Joomla.

It was a lot worse when 1.6 was first released because, obviously, nothing was compatible. But as 1.7 (and 2.5 when it is released) is compatible to with 1.6, minimal effort is required to make things work in the newer versions of Joomla.

If you need help sourcing alternative extensions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help you :)

    • Hi Anthony. I am glad that you are so happy with J! 1.7 and have all necessary extensions for your purpose.

I accept that it is my fault to assume a CMS should be all about "written content with fancy graphics" and should be proficient in "dispaying written content professionally". So I should be able to publish 15 page articles with nice TOC navigation etc.

However, what I see is ( whatever the name of CMS is WP, Druplal, J!) the development focus is on creating effects to display graphics, modules, plug-ins etc to make a difference. No one develops article layouts, no one develops TOC plug-ins, no one develops article navigation plug-ins...

There is an old saying attributed to an ancient Minister of Education here : "If there were no schools, we would manage the Ministry fabulously". I guess CMS developers implicitly agree to this.

Now, please excuse me, I need to find some RT sample articles to copy their multi-column sample content - those grid definitions like "rt-grid-omega" etc is not documented either. Hopefully I can find a three column layout there...

    • I would agree, the difference between 1.5 and 1.7 is insane, the easiest way is just start from scratch, perhaps the only way.
