Search page - list search results - order setting.

I have a Joomla 1.7 sites with RT templates and I have a Search page menu item setup as:
Search ยป List Search Results
For the "Results Ordering" setting I have "Popularity" selected in admin control panel. But on the sites when you click to the search page the default setting is "Newest" for the search results ordering. Is there a way to set this up so the default search results setting lists the most popular articles instead of the newest first?
It's not a big issue since the user can always use the drop-down box to change the search results from newest first to popularity. I was just wondering if I'm missing something in the menu item for the search page setting.
Thanks for any advice! - NOTE to forum mods: Right-Click is disabled on my site but source code is visible. Unfortunately, I have some images on my site that are licensed and the agreement is that right-click be disabled. I use the F12 key for Firebug instead of right-click. Sorry for the inconvenience.
