    Frustrating tracking versions and filenames

Posted 13 years 6 months ago
    • Tracking Versions:
So I'm trying to migrate a site to the latest Enigma template. I understand in a global group of part time volunteers it is not easy to make sure every template packages get updated with the latest modules, but it seems ridiculous that there is no single place on the RT website to go find the latest version numbers for the currently supported (approximately) 24 templates and 21 extensions.

There are twelve free extensions, most with a J1.5 and a J1.7 version. There are at least nine Club extensions, again with various J1.5 and J1.7 templates. Next approximately 24 templates supported with the 1.5 and 1.7. (looks like in excess of 70 version numbers!) Every two weeks when I update my three websites I need to search and scroll through pages of templates, updates, sidebars, and extension descriptions to determine what has been updated and what might be the latest version. At least for those of us in the club, could somebody maintain a sheet/page with the latest version numbers of extensions and templates [I'd like to see how to do this in Joomla :? . ) Yes there will have to be two versions J1.5 and J1.7, the latest Gantry and maybe even Joomla rev, but it could save a lot of us serious time. It seems a third of the responses from Rocketeers involve "Install the latest update." How about making them easier to find.

      Filenaming:
When I download extensions, the zip files do not have a naming convention. e.g. todays RokMiniEvents J1.7 says it should be the October 6 build v1.5 - the file that downloads is named: mod_rokminievents_j16.zip and is actually the June build! Arrrrgh! The version isn't indicated on the filename, so I downloaded it a few times (and uploaded it to the website) to make sure it wasn't my error.

11/11/11: There is a security message about the com_rokmodule, it needs to be updated to v1.3 for J1.7, the file that downloads is named com_rokmodule-j17.zip How can I tell the difference between that and the zip I downloaded last week? Why can't the version be included in the file name? We basically have to upload the file to the site to determine what it is or unzip it and open the XML file, which should be an unnecessary step.

How about a module/template naming convention? It would help your posters and updaters make sure they are posting the correct version:
      e.g. mod_rokminievents_j17v1.5.zip

      Flack

PS: I know feature requests probably go somewhere else, but it really would be nice if Mission Control would let me know what modules and extensions need updating.... maybe someone is already working on it.

PSS: I hate to be critical..... I think your teams and support people do great work and it keeps me in the Joomla and RT community!

    • This is basically a list:

File Naming: Is there any reason you would keep the older versions? I would recommend deleting older releases to make way for the new.

    • hi there,

thanks about the info about rokminievents. i just tested the packages, the one for joomla 1.5 is the correct version, but the one for joomla 1.7 needs to be corrected, i will inform the developers and it should be fixed today.

    • digitalFlack,

Just to clarify, I recommend deleting old releases for the purpose of avoiding the confusion you described. In practice I actually rename the different zip files myself archiving them for future use.

    • Ben,

I wasn't clear enough. I do try to delete (or archive) old modules to avoid confusion.

The extensions update page read like press releases, ten per page. (Example) You have to scroll back three pages to just determine the most recent RokWeather version, or click to the Extensions -> Sub folder -> Club -> RokWeather -> open description to determine it is currently version 1.3

The pain is that most sites/templates have 6-10 modules, extensions, or plug-ins. The process has to be repeated for each one. I suspect the RT team knows the versions instantly because they deal with them every day. The developers who maintains 4-5 web sites, a few times a month, have to spend time just checking to see what extensions and templates have been tweaked.

It would be nice to have a table of RT versions so that when I'm in the Extension Manager I can just compare its list of module versions and a table provided by RT.

My belief is that you get many support requests that eventually result in "Update to the latest version" but RT hasn't made it easy to spot the latest version across so many templates, plug-ins and extensions.

I'd sign up for an email list that provided a weekly list of updates and a complete list of current versions - or put it in a members only location on the website.

    • John,

I see what you're saying. You'd like a list based on the templates you use. That would be very useful. The problem for me is very similar. I have extensions from RT and from other developers. I tend to keep up (via RSS or email) with updates to the extensions and in turn apply these to the sites I already know have them.

Not to add another item to your wish list but as developers support the Joomla Extension Manager Update feature, this process will become easier.

    • Ahhh... there is something I didn't know. There will be a Joomla Extension Update Manager...... other than the file naming situation, that takes care of my situation... eventually!

      Thanks
