How do you redesign

  • How do you redesign

    • Hey Everyone,

I'm wanting to use a new RocketTheme template for my website. I want to implement it without my members being able to see me working on it, such as moving things from module to module.

I'm on a schedule where I add content a couple times a week. My question is, how should I proceed to "upgrade" the look of my site so that I can unveil the new look all at once? Another way to look at it is: How can I keep my guests/members from seeing me assembling the new design?

I hope it's clear as to what I'm asking.... :|

    • Putting the whole new design into a subdirectory of your site and then protect that subfolder using .htaccess

    • I'd simply clone the site into a new subdomain and work on it there. Akeeba Backup makes it easy to do this, and working on a copy of the site will ensure that nothing at all gets screwed up in the live site. No need to protect it as long as there are no links taking people to that area.

    • The only thing you should consider when not protecting it, is that your entire dev part may be indexed by google :cheesy:

    • Would the live site and the one in the subdirectory share the same database or should I have separate databases?

    • You are using J! 1.5 atm?
Upgrade to J1.7 while you are at it, have two seperate installs/databases.
That is what I would do myself.

    • Well I'm actually running J1.7.3 right now. I'm just wanting to use a new template, that's all.

Ok, I was guessing separate databases would be better, but would be somewhat redundant since I'll have to add the same new content to both installs until the redesign is complete.

Thanks for all your input! 8)

    • I'm kind of feeling overwhelmed starting this endeavor. I'm looking for an alternative to starting with a fresh website install, because I don't want to have to reconfigure settings for my components, and re-add all the content. There's got to be a better way than starting completely over. If I have to start over I may mess up the URLs and meta data I've used too...

Any further input on this stuff?
