    SOLVED: Joomla Beginner

Posted 13 years 4 months ago
    • Greetings!

As a complete beginner with Joomla and Rocket Themes, I'm a little overwhelmed with trying to implement a site. At this point, I think I've managed to figure out how to find and replace content but I'm at a loss to figure out how all the bits a pieces fit together and interrelate.

I'm hoping someone can do is point me in the right direction as far as a systematic way to learn this stuff, preferably with suggestions where I can find the info, as well.

I have looked at a few Joomla tutorials that have given me the basics and I have poked around on the forums here but I seems to be flailing around in an attempt to learn what I need. So far, it's been frustrating because the information either doesn't relate to what I'm trying to to or they are so generalized that it doesn't really help with using a template.

I'm more than willing to put in the time to learn this stuff, I was just hoping someone could suggest an order for topics & concepts that I should review so that I can get the most out of the awesome templates the good folks here have created.

Thanks in advance for any help or insights!

    • I love concepts.

Joomla - - - Joomla is a content management system that creats a website based on elements within that site. The most important element and first concept to understand is the menu system.. This is where your "HOME" tab and About Us and all other tabs for your website reside.

The second concept to understand about Joomla is how it displays information on each and every web page. Each page has the ability to have an Article or a Module inserted in various locations of your sites page.

This is where Rockettheme comes in. RT sets up a standard for you of where the Module positions / locations can be inserted. The mainbody is usualy where you would place an article of some sort.

The module is a very important concept to understand, a module can be anything such as an HTML code insert for posting youtube videos or perhaps inserting another menu which would be in a module location, or perhaps a module that inputs something like email address, etc...

The third concept to understand is how you can spruce up your site to do exactly what you want to do. You do this by using extensions from Joomla.org in the forms of modules and plugins. Many are free, and many are not. You have to pick through and research which you need and which are best suited for your needs. If you have to pay then you have to pay don't cheap out your site for a future headache later.

The final concept I will speak about is what a plugin is. A plugin is something that enhances your sites capabilties from a backend perspective. This could make an extension more powerful or a module more powerful itself. They usually need activated after installing them and you can make edits in the backend for visualization in the frontend.

      Hope this helps.
