    Time Trials

Posted 12 years 10 months ago
    • I've always liked to challenge myself on how quickly I can assemble a new site, or restore a site from backups. It has been handy when site problems occur. Many of the tasks can be scripted, for extra speed.

It occurred to me that those people who are constantly refreshing their browsers on the first day of each month, might like a real challenge.

How quickly can you assemble a basic web site with the new template and have it available to be viewed? There need to be be some requirements, such as a minimal set of modifications to the rocketlauncher defaults, in order to qualify as an "assembled site". How about these?

      1. Install the rocketlauncher version of the new template.
      2. Customize the site name.
      3. Add 4 new images to the main showcase.
      4. Add one article to the front page.
      5. Add a custom logo.
      6. Customize the copyright notice.
      7. Customize the browser page title.
      8. Set a different template style from the default one.
      9. Make it all look nice, and not sloppy.
10.Post the URL in the user submissions forum.

Such a challenge might motivate some clever folks to write some clever scripts and develop new techniques, some of which they might even share. What do you folks think?

    • Just my 2 cents...

      1. Install the rocketlauncher version of the new template.

Dependant on the server and uploading the zipped RL and extracting it there vs. extracting on local machine and uploading all the files, an install of the RL should take less than 20 minutes. Speedy, if you know what you are doing, installs takes < 10 minutes.

      2. Customize the site name.

Once the site has been uploaded and is working, though the CP - Admin, Menu Manager, Article Manager, etc, changing the site name take about 30 seconds.

      3. Add 4 new images to the main showcase.

As long as you know the path for the showcase files, replace them with your new images. It takes <10 minutes, as long as they have been formatted properly.

(If you change paths through Admin, you will need to edit original paths)

Dependant on default paths, or custom paths, images/stories/your folder, or images/new folder

      4. Add one article to the front page.

Knowing where the FP Articles are published, that is a Joomla basic, being able to find them, edit them, delete them or add to them.

      Many of us use this:

      www.rsjoomla.com/joomla-extensions/jooml...istrator-search.html

      5. Add a custom logo.

All covered in to the tutorials section for each template, i.e., uploading to the proper folder, replacing the original, resize, etc., etc.

      6. Customize the copyright notice.

Again, that covered in the tutorials.

      7. Customize the browser page title.

      It’s in the Admin section.

      8. Set a different template style from the default one.

If you are using Gantry, check the tutorials for template styles.

      9. Make it all look nice, and not sloppy.

      That is up to you…

10.Post the URL in the user submissions forum.

When you are done, copy your URL and make a new post.

      Bottom line, Joomla75% = Template 15% - Developer 10% - YOU – 10%.

So, there is no way Joomla or a template developer could possibly create a ‘simple script’ to do the above mentioned for every permutation for every version and every template… That last 10% is where you as a developer comes in, using your expertise of Joomla and various templates to create a site.

Bottom line, what you are looking for does not exist.

Wow. You have completely misread what I was talking about. The scripting that I referred to was for individual parts of the process, not the entire thing. This is about a fun 'race' to get a sample site up, after templates are released. Where did all of this defensiveness come from?

      Hello WBoro,

Apologies if you interpreted my post as ‘defensive’ as opposed to ‘realistic.’

I understand what you are talking about, however… :D
