How to explain Joomla to a two year old?

Posted 17 years 8 months ago
    • Howdy all,

I am a newbie to the whole Joomla deal. My first site I am building is at sharegrace.org and I have applied the FireFrog template to this site. So far I have figured out how to add a forum with step by step instructions, and am trying to add the module "Ajax Header Rotator" to make the frog logo rotate. But I am completely lost...wait that is an understatement...I can log into my Admin area and stare at the screen...but starring doesn't seem to actually do anything...hehehe

So, where does a complete clueless nube like me even start with all this? What I think I know is that Joomla is a whole series of "Pieces" strung together by one common back bone which is Joomla. The back bone can have different templates applied to give it a different look and feel and that is what I did with my RocketTheme. You can add different pieces in and take others out to fit your needs and that is what I did with the Forum and am trying to do with the header rotator. If I have the concept down (I hope I do) where can I go for some understanding better what all the pieces are, how they work together, etc. Once example - I can make the header rotator appear in the middle of my home page and it does in fact rotate, but how do I use it to replace the frog jpg? Or maybe I shouldn't even try this module to do that cause it is a square and the frog jpg is a circle.....how do I know what is the right tool for what I want to do?

Can anyone just perform a Vulcan mind meld and fill my head with all the answers to al my Joomla questions and make me an instant expert?

      Thanks,
      :) dave.

    • David,

I started like you, I started building static websites from scratch until I bumped in to this CMS thing. Logo on a template is always the first thing that we change and I basically dug deep on this initially until I joined Rockettheme where Andy made tutorials on modifying the logo. If there is none for this template you are using, check out tutorials.rockettheme.com this should just be similar to the other logo tutorials up there. Or check out discussion on this template www.rockettheme.com/index.php?option=com...temid=149&board=27.0

Fresh from my mind, I think I started looking at the contents (after i managed to change the logo). All this content from the control panel and the menu bar on top. Played around with how the content looked and adding images. Easy to follow around because it looks similar to posting a message in this forum.

Then I started adding modules that I thought I would need in the website (similar to the forum you added in your site). Lots of modules and components in extensions.joomla.org/

Also, there are heaps of help around in getting started with Joomla like help.joomla.org/

Finally, look at the basic things first or the things that you need in your site learn how to deal with them and check out the other stuffs that Joomla has to offer. I can probably related this to learning how to write a report with you favourite document processing application like Word the old Wordstar.

Good Luck and I hope I have shared a little of my experience when I was starting with Joomla.

      Regards

    • Thanks Alain,

I have started going through the help file. As luck would have it i was workng on the database with GoDaddy support last night trying to get the SMF forum installed and our power went out. I am not sure what happened but the database got hosed, so I re-installed it today and now have the chance to start all over from scratch. :) hehehe.

      Thanks for the help!
      :) dave.
