General compatibility question for mobile devices

Hallo
I am planning to give some of my sites a fresh new look at the end of 2012. Before deciding for a new template, I would like to get more insights about compatibility of RT templates (mainly Joomla 2.5 maybe also phpBB3) with mobile devices.
I looked at some recent templates and there was always written "iphone/android..."
Can somebody give me a link to an explanation what in detail that means? I mean compatibilty a a very subjective word. And it alos depends on which OR you are running. There are myn different with Android, and does this mean only Android phones or also android tablets and in teh case of the iphone also the ipod touch and the ipad 2 (and 3 with its higher resolution)
Since the "masses" are switching more and more to tablets and smart phones, I want to make sure to choose only templates, that are easy and nice with all kind of mobile devices AND of course older PCs and netbooks.
So any detailed explanation and/or link would be nice.
