Im just wondering what the general thoughts are of Magento against Virtuemart. I have been using Virtuemart but feel that im struggling to get a really polished professional result from. I am considering using another cart system, but im not sure what to use.
We haven't worked with Magento for some time, but I can tell you that Virtuemart is a complete pain in the backside to work with. Totally illogical + rude, unhelpful support from the VM team.
As with most shopping cart systems, if you use it 'out of the box' without changing any of the functionality then you should have few issues, but if you're trying to make it do something that isn't built in or extending the functionality, then that's where the problems come in.
...not to mention major issues with the latest VM release and many of the critical bugs reported are not addressed. I'm late to the VM game, but wish I could have the days of my life back I spent trying to fix it.
Yes, exactly . . . the response from VM Support to all the issues we had was "pay us and we'll fix them". They don't listen to their customers at all any longer. Not a system we will ever use again.
This discussion has already been had around here quite a few times, so a search should turn up a few results.
One thing to note is that VirtueMart is an extension for a CMS that lets you have some store functions, whereas Magento is a full blown store. You can get a better idea of the main differences here -

It really comes down to the size of the store - if it's only a few products, then maybe VirtueMart might be the way to go as you already have experience with Joomla. But if it's for a lot of products, you'll want something more dedicated to ecommerce, so Magento is definitely the way to go in that case.
In any case, I highly recommend Magento - will seem totally alien to begin with, but once you get to grips with it it's really great.
