Dont care how good their component is.
eh? no offense Timothy, but telling people not to support proprietary developers is a bit rich, seeing as proprietory developers are probably the main reason for Joomla's phenomenal growth. I doubt any proprietary developer is "anti-Joomla". I would think they love Joomla (the script). That does not mean they have to love the decisions made by the core Joomla developers.
GNU/GPL is the greatest thing to ever happen to the software/script development world. I love it as much as you do Timothy. However, at the end of the day I'm not the kinda guy that throws out Windows to be anti-establishment, cool, or just to be different. Windows does most of the things I need better than any GNU/GPL Op.System. I wish I could use a GNU/GPL OS, and the second one gets good enough to rival Windows on a desktop, I'll switch, you can be sure of that!
In the same way, the Joomla component Hot Property, for example, meets my needs better than the GNU/GPL alternatives do. There is no way I will use a lesser product just because it is GNU/GPL.
Should we tell Andy to stop using Adobe Fireworks? It is proprietary
Should we tell the Joomla core team to stop using the proprietary component 'Mosets Tree' for the Joomla Extension Directory?
Andy and the Joomla core team chose SMF, which is proprietory. Only now that there is a close enough or better alternative (phpbb3), are they planning to make a change.
Proprietary developers have done a lot for Joomla, in fact, most of the extensions on the Joomla Extensions Directory, were made by developers of proprietary extensions.
I say, support anyone who builds tools that make your work easier. If you have a choice between two extensions that meet your needs equally well, and one of them is GNU/GPL, please, please go with he GNU/GPL product. However, at the end of the day, regardless of whether you choice is GNU/GPL or proprietary, support the developer(s).
seeing as proprietory developers are probably the main reason for Joomla's phenomenal growth. << before anyone attacks me on this one, let me explain. It is my belief that Joomla, without extensions, is pretty plain and not any better than any other CMS out there (from a laymans/users view). It is an established fact that a significant majority of the extensions on the Joomla Extension Directory are developed by developers of proprietary extensions. On an average, every developer of a proprietary extension also released two GNU/GPL extensions. In fact, it was the commercial extension they sold that paid for the development of their GNU/GPL extensions. I believe it is the extensions that draw people to Joomla and by extension, the developers of proprietary extensions, who have contributed the most to Joomla's recent growth.
