    Minimalist + FLAT UI Design

Posted 11 years 11 months ago
    • Hi RocketTheme,

I've been a RT customer for many years but I still look forward to the 1st of each month to see the new Joomla template. RT templates and extensions are peerless in sophistication and functionality which is why I keep coming back. In fact, the only suggestion I can offer is the addition of minimalist and flat UI design to the RT style repertoire. Personally, I long for simple no-frill menus, bold typography on solid backgrounds, simple flat buttons and icons w/ no gradients, dropshadows, or border/corner effects. IMO, the combination of simple minimalism with the power of RT extensions and Joomla! would be utterly sublime!

      Anyone agree?

Thanks RT theme for your innovation and excellent work.

    • Thanks for the reply Igor. Yes, I've looked at AfterBurner2, downloaded it, and hope it becomes a trend. As a free theme however, it doesn't have the built-in interactivity, module variations, or functionality as seen in Oculus or Camber for example. I think these features are what make RT a unique vendor.

    • Yes, some features may slow down load time, and I do recognize the goal of Afterburner. However, minimalism and flat design are design genres in their own right—not necessarily achieved by deconstructing or reconstructing other layouts. (eg. designinstruct.com/visual-inspiration/we...ist-website-designs/ ) The advantage in adding minimalist and flat themes to RT's collection is not to achieve better load times, rather it's to reach different markets. Where Afterburner2 is one instance of flat design, this is a call for more minimalist and flat design complete with the robust functionality typical of RT Club Themes.

For instance, over the years, RT themes have been excellent for entertainment, gaming, travel, pop culture, e-commerce, etc. A quick switch of the backgrounds, logo and color scheme, and RT themes are nearly ready-to-use out of the box—for these markets.

In my experience, among photographers, financial services, artists, designers, A/C/E, venture capital start ups, medical, health services, and most licensed professionals, the demand is for a clean look and feel with modest to no embellishments. These customers still need the interactivity and functionality that RT extensions offer, while designers/developers/publishers like me want to spend minimal time restyling the design and maximum time developing content and user experience.

      :D

    • That makes sense.

Personally, I've found Metropolis a great template to use for those same reasons. The iconography (which is on all newer templates now) is nice and fits with that design very well. It's also easy to strip out the background and any box shadows if you so choose. With the "basic" module class suffix, it's also easy to just have modules without a box background as well.

We'll see what the designers keep coming up with, but til then, Metropolis is sort of a "go-to" template for me!

    • Funny you should mention Metropolis. Just yesterday, I was searching through the themes again and that one stood out as the easiest to deconstruct. Thanks for recommending it.
